Too Much Sugar
“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have received from God, and that you are not your own? You have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Let’s be honest—we love to eat. Food is a beautiful part of life, especially when it brings us together in celebration and faith. But when food becomes our comfort instead of our fuel, something shifts. We miss the deeper purpose.
We’re a nation where two-thirds of us are overweight or obese. I experienced this struggle firsthand—living in the cycle of sugar highs, crashes, and constant hunger, wondering why fasting felt so hard. What I didn’t realize is that God was with me, preparing me for spiritual fasting by learning the real side effects of sugar: over desire and overeating!
Sugar is in almost everything. It tricks our bodies into craving more and more. It tastes amazing, but it’s also addicting and destructive. It disrupts our hormones, inflames our systems, and leaves us exhausted and spiritually disconnected.
I saw this in my own family when my son battled migraines. No medicine worked—until we changed his diet. We cut sugar, cleaned up our food, and focused on gut health. His healing changed everything. I became passionate about real food and real fasting.
This terrible life event that turned out to be a Holy Opportunity, changed how we viewed our bodies and souls. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, designed by God. Digestion is a miracle—starting with chewing and ending with nutrient absorption in the gut. Healthy food fuels this process. Processed food clogs it. This information goes beyond cravings and into damage.
The more whole food we eat—chicken, greens, sweet potatoes—the more our bodies thrive. The more junk we eat—chips, cereal, fast food—the more our bodies suffer. But we can retrain ourselves slowly with grace.
When you have a craving—try a bit of salt. I keep a little bowl of pink salt mixed with blessed salt on my desk and when I have a craving and it is not time to eat—I put a few grains on my tongue and my craving goes away. I also add a Hail Mary for someone which adds to the Holy opportunity.
I also stopped drinking diet drinks. Research shows, and I’ve personally seen, that diet drinks spike hunger and cravings. They trick the brain into thinking calories are coming, but when they don’t arrive, the body ramps up desire. Ditch these items and you will feel so much better!
Weight loss is a hormone battle. Insulin is a fat storage hormone and leptin and ghrelin are hormones that regulate hunger and fullness. Sugar affects them all—affecting our health and our weight. The result? You feel constantly hungry and never satisfied.
With spiritual fasting and whole foods, we teach the body to use the soul to become a fat-burner instead of a sugar-burner. That’s when fasting becomes joyful and peaceful and spiritual.
So, what should you do? Try this: Eat protein, fiber, and good fat. Delay the sugar. And Pray!!
Create a weekly plan. Plan in more vegetables, healthy fats, and proteins. Delay sugar, flour, alcohol, and processed foods to planned moments—eventually just on Sundays—the Feast Day of Our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Pray before you eat. Journal struggles. Get coached. Track how often you feel bloated or need an antacid. It all matters! Ask yourself, “Does this food glorify God in my body?”
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about faithfulness.
Your body is a gift. And every bite is a chance to honor God and help others.
You’ve got this. I’m cheering you on as you Delay and Pray. Let’s keep going—one holy bite at a time.
