The 3 M’s of Delay and Pray®

Feb 6, 2025

I have told you about the enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach. Their glory is in their shame. Their minds are occupied with earthly things.

– Philippians 3:18-19

Delay and Pray® has changed my life in so many ways for the better.

It is a method of spiritual fasting that helps you regain your spiritual edge and grow in virtue while becoming fit in both body and soul. It isn’t a diet because it is centered on Christ and detachment from food and alcohol as comfort. God should be our comforter.

Today I want to discuss all of this in the context of the 3 M’s of Delay and Pray® that are so important to remember in driving incredible results in both body and soul and why overeating and overdrinking hinders your ability to both physically and spiritually fast.

The goal is not to just become thin and healthy but to get to heaven—to really dive into your interior life and find out why you are overeating and overdrinking in the first place. These are vices—gluttony and drunkenness and they need to be brought into the light.

In Saint Pope John Paul II’s letter titled “Penitential Fasting Is Therapy for the Soul”, he describes Spiritual Fasting as “a special moderation in the consumption of food except to maintain one’s strength”. He elaborates on how important it is to “rediscover the art of fasting especially in the parts of the world and in those circumstances where there is plenty of food and even where illness is caused by overeating.”

“Peace is yours as a gift from the Lord, as a responsibility and a challenge.” – Saint Pope John Paul II

Delay and Pray® is focused on eliminating sugar, flour, and alcohol for a period of time such as Lent to help you spiritually fast during every week of the year for the rest of your life.

The 3 M’s needed for successful fasting during Lent coming up in just a few weeks: (in this order)
1. Motivational Goal Setting
2. Mind Management through a Catholic Lens and Catholic Coaching; and
3. Methods to stay on track that gather evidence of success, and help us overcome failures.

In this program, I suggest 2 Motivational Goals:
• Physical goal == usually a Weight loss goal to help you with measuring success
• Spiritual goal == a person or breakthrough that you are you fasting for

Learning to manage our mind and self-coach with a guided journal using The Delay and Pray Model is key to keeping up your motivation. Here is the model:
C – Circumstance in our life
T – Thoughts – What we think of that circumstance
F – Feelings – How that thought makes me feel
A – Actions – What actions I take out of that emotion
R – Results – How I show up in the world.

Ultimately – our thoughts create our results.

When we become aware of our weaknesses and sins, we can take them to the Lord for healing in many ways, as mentioned in this episode. Tune in to hear the Methods for fasting success, and much more.

May God Bless you on your Spiritual Fasting journey as you prepare for Lent.
