A Thorn In My Flesh
“Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord.”
– 1 Cor 15:58
Eating is biological, neurological and theological. We must consider all three things if we want to take a look at our hunger.
If we consider our hunger as a beautiful spice helping us realize that we need some type of fuel for our bodies and souls, then we can step back and deal with it appropriately.
I have been doing this for years. What I have found is that there is a direct correlation between my hunger for sweets and processed food and the amount of time I spend with the Sacraments and prayer.
I am thinking of hunger as a St. Paul type of thorn in my flesh. And, recently, I’ve discovered that I’m okay with this thorn — this was after the Lord brought a real painful thorn into my life over a holiday weekend.
In the process of weeding around rosebushes on our deck and pruning them, I ended up with one of the largest thorns stuck in the knuckle of my finger.
In this episode, I reflect on how the experience relates to seeking Jesus in all circumstances of life. I draw parallels to Saint Paul’s thorn in the flesh and share my acronym T.H.O.R.N for dealing with spiritual fasting challenges.
The question that I have not considered before is: Is our struggle with food and alcohol our “thorns in our flesh?”
Well, let’s boast of our weakness and go to the Divine Physician to get it removed! And, then give Him the glory!!
This may take a while!
In other words — is food freedom and moderation of sugar, flour, and alcohol going to be something we keep working on for a long time for the good of ourselves and others? Could be!
Listen in to my perspective on dealing with thorns. Discover how the thorns in our lives can lead us to prayer, adoration, and ultimately, closer to God.
