the sugar poem

My last blog summarized how sugar can cause detrimental effects on the body when consumed too often. My program is focused on eliminating sugar from the body for a period of time every week to help you spiritually fast. This is the work of your body for sure. But, there is another key element to success: Your mind and thought work.

Managing your mind is the work of your soul. Talking your will into actually quitting the sugar is the challenging part of this process. The sweetness of sugar can give us such comfort in so many ways. But, it can be eliminated for a time and it isn’t that hard with the right tools, regular reception of the Sacraments, and coaching.

Our thoughts about sugar always end up in our results!

I share with you a poem I discovered in a book by Wendy Speake, called The 40-Day Sugar Fast. The poem is written by Rebecca Kay Reynolds, and it speaks to the heart about how our thoughts about the sweetness of sugar can keep us from what we really need in both body and soul.

Sugar Poem — Rebecca Kay Reynolds

Sugar because I’m tired,
because there’s simply too much to do and no way to do it.

Sugar because it is fast,
and I need 30 more minutes of strength.

Sugar because I’m lonely,
because something sweet tastes like human touch.

Sugar because it’s cheap,
one buck instead of five.

Sugar because I did not plan,
I did not take time to prep to stand against the current.

Sugar because I’m sad about so many things,
and for two seconds I can forget.

Sugar because I don’t want to move,
and sugar sits here with me.

Sugar because I’m scared,
of what might pull me if I were fit.

Sugar because I’m angry,
I don’t care what happens.

Sugar because I’m ashamed,
of how far I’ve let it go already.

Sugar because I’m addicted,
caught in a drunken cycle of lows and highs.

Sugar because she loved by sugar,
when she wanted to give me comfort and I remember.

Sugar because I have not learned to value,
what is simple and beautiful.

Sugar because I don’t trust,
that manna will appear again in the morning.

Sugar because I don’t believe,
I will ever adjust.

Sugar because those first three days,
Are war.

Sugar because tomorrow,
tomorrow,
tomorrow I’ll start.

Sugar because I never can see,
that every single day is the first day of the rest of a better life.
