Chapter 7 – Too Much Sugar
“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have received from God, and that you are not your own? You have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.”
– I Corinthians 6:19-20
Have you considered how food, especially sugar and processed items, directly impacts both our physical and spiritual well-being?
Rooted in Chapter 7 of the Delay and Pray® book, this episode goes far beyond standard nutritional advice. Beth challenges us to see digestion not as a biological function alone, but as a sacred process designed by God. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit—and how we treat them matters deeply.
A Culture Addicted to Sweetness
We live in a world where sweetness is everywhere, and unfortunately, most of it is artificially engineered. Sugar is designed to be irresistible, offering comfort instead of true nourishment. In the episode, Beth reflects on her own struggles with sugar and how the cultural overconsumption of processed food leaves our bodies and souls depleted.
She shares a personal story about her son’s health crisis and how cleaning up their family’s diet—eliminating processed food and focusing on whole, real ingredients—brought healing and clarity. It was a spiritual turning point that revealed how powerfully food affects our ability to fast, pray, and live in peace.
Digestion is Sacred
Beth reframes digestion as a God-given gift. From chewing slowly to how the small intestine absorbs nutrients, every part of the digestive process works together to support our mission in life. But when we overload our bodies with processed food, we interrupt this sacred rhythm.
Foods rich in fiber—like vegetables, healthy fats, and lean proteins—support the digestive system and create the physical conditions needed for spiritual fasting. In contrast, processed sugar and artificial ingredients block this harmony and leave us in a cycle of hunger, fatigue, and spiritual fog.
The Hormonal Truth Behind Your Cravings
Much of what we blame on willpower is actually hormonal imbalance. Beth explains the role of insulin, leptin, and ghrelin in our eating behavior. Too much sugar spikes insulin, which then disrupts leptin (the fullness hormone), leading to constant hunger and cravings.
Spiritual fasting, combined with nutrient-dense foods, restores hormonal balance. This is where true metabolic flexibility begins—and where peace, clarity, and joy return to the body and soul.
A New Protocol for the Temple
This episode offers a simple yet powerful takeaway: more fiber, less sugar. Beth encourages listeners to adopt a spiritual fasting protocol based on the “eat fast feast” cycle—focusing on whole foods during the week and saving sugar or processed treats for Sunday celebrations.
She also encourages mindful eating habits: chew slowly, pause between bites, pray over your meals, and track how your body responds. Every meal is an opportunity to glorify God in your body.
Glorify God in Your Body
The episode closes with a meditation on 1 Corinthians 6:19-20:
“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have received from God, and that you are not your own? You have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.”
This is the heart of spiritual fasting. It’s not about perfection—it’s about returning to a place of intentionality, reverence, and alignment with God’s design. Every delayed bite becomes an act of love. Every nourishing meal becomes an offering.
