The Battle for Your Appetite Part 1
“Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
– Romans 12:2
Have you ever finished a full meal and still found yourself searching for dessert, chocolate, or something sweet? You may not actually be hungry—and that distinction matters. God created the human body with an appetite designed to help us seek nourishment, but our modern habits of constant eating, highly processed foods, sugar, flour, and alcohol can make those natural signals increasingly difficult to hear.
In Part 1 of The Battle for Your Appetite, I explore understanding appetite from both a Catholic and scientific perspective. We look at the difference between physical hunger and the desire for pleasure or reward, and how our senses, emotions, memories, habits, and brain chemistry can pull us toward food before our reason has had a chance to respond. I also explain the important roles of insulin and leptin, how insulin resistance and leptin resistance can disrupt the body’s communication with the brain, and fascinating research from Dr. Robert Lustig and Dr. Richard Johnson suggesting that fructose may influence appetite, metabolic health, and our drive to continue seeking food.
This is exactly why the Delay and Pray® method can be so powerful. By delaying sugar, paying attention to genuine hunger, fasting for a spiritual purpose, and creating a sacred pause between desire and action, we give our intellect and will an opportunity to choose what is truly good instead of simply reacting to a craving. Choosing Christ before sugar isn’t another diet—it is formation in temperance, freedom, and learning to make our God-given appetite trustworthy again.
