Thanksgiving Episode: “The Feast Before the Feast”

Nov 27, 2025

“For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.”

– John 6:55

Thanksgiving is more than turkey, pie, and family – it’s Eucharistic. The very word Eucharist means Thanksgiving. Every time we attend Mass, we come before the Lord to say, “Thank you.” We unite our lives with the sacrifice of Christ, receiving true food and true drink that satisfy far more deeply than anything on the holiday table.

G.K. Chesterton once wrote, “Thanks is the highest form of thought.” Gratitude lifts the mind and purifies the heart. It reorders us toward the Giver instead of the gift. The atheist may feel thankfulness and have no one to thank – but we, as Catholics, know exactly whom to thank.

We are invited to the Feast of all feasts. The Eucharist is no ordinary meal; it’s our lifeline. At the altar, Jesus Christ offers Himself again and again, inviting us to dine at the table of redemption. Yet how often do we make excuses not to go? The parable of the great banquet in Luke 14 reminds us how easily distractions steal our seat at the table—family, busyness, entertainment, food prep, even good things that become idols.

This year, make no excuses. Begin your Thanksgiving with Mass. Receive the Lord’s true food before your own meal. Let your feast flow from Mass, and your gratitude rise like incense to heaven. Eat well, move joyfully, and let your body preach the Gospel through discipline and joy. Enough is as good as a feast.
