The Hazards of Diet Coke
“ Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds”
– Ephesians 4:22-23
Have you ever convinced yourself that Diet Coke is a harmless indulgence because it contains no sugar and no calories? If you’re trying to lose weight, improve your health, or break free from unhealthy habits, diet soda can seem like the perfect solution. But what if the very beverage you believe is helping you is actually making it harder to reach your goals? In this episode, I share my personal struggle with Diet Coke addiction and why I’ve chosen to give it up for good.
For years, Diet Coke was a daily companion in my life, often paired with salty snacks and followed by increased hunger, overeating, and cravings that felt impossible to ignore. As I dug deeper into the research, I discovered growing concerns surrounding artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose. While marketed as healthier alternatives to sugary drinks, studies suggest these beverages may influence appetite, metabolism, blood sugar regulation, brain health, and even cardiovascular function in ways many people never consider.
In this episode, we explore five major health concerns associated with diet soda consumption, including weight gain, increased cravings, metabolic dysfunction, cognitive health risks, and heart and kidney health concerns. We also discuss how artificial sweeteners may impact long-term wellness, why freedom from food attachments matters in the Catholic life, and healthier alternatives that support both physical and spiritual transformation. If you’re ready to evaluate whether diet soda is serving your health goals or standing in the way of them, this episode is for you.
